Abstract
In the present study, parietin was extracted from wild type and mutant strain of lichen Xanthoria parietina. Six different solvents (acetone, ethanol, methanol, hexane, chloroform and distilled water) were used to extract parietin. The parietin activity was found to be maximal when the extraction was carried out with 3 ml of methanol at 30ºC for 1 h. All the extracts were further proceeded to test the antifungal activity against different fungal species i.e., Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus oryzae, Acremonium chrysogenum, Trichoderma harz anium and Rhizopus spp. It was observed that A. niger and A. oryzae are most sensitive to X. parietina. However, Rhizopus spp. showed resistance against lichen extracts except ethanol. The methanol extract of EMS mutated strain proved to be more effective to inhibit the growth of A. niger. Moreover, 62.5% stronger antifungal activity was observed within the treated sample as compared to untreated sample. HPLC analysis also represented more than 90% purity of methanol extract with some trace elements. The results showed that studied lichen species possess strong antifungal activity.
