Experiments were conducted in farmer's field under irrigated conditions in Peshawar division (Peshawar and Mardan districts) during 1984-85 at nine locations to test the yield potential of three new wheat varieties, Pirsabak 85, Pak 81 and Sarhad 82 following either maize or sugarcane, a common cropping pattern followed in the area. The yield data revealed that Pirsabak 85 produced the highest grain yield of 4.38 t/ha, respectively. Significant yield differences existed between locations which had different dates of planting or had different previous crops. Higher yields were obtained from earlier planting when wheat was sown after maize as compared with late planting after sugarcane. However, all the three varieties did well and could be recommended for cultivation after maize or sugarcane in the irrigated areas of Peshawar Division.
