Abstract
Six food items were offered to individually caged parakeets for preference and palatability tests. In single choice tests, preference exhibited by the birds for various items was highly significant (F equals to 5.86; P less than 0.05). It showed that bajra, maize (whole grain) were the most preferred, while rice (broken and full grain) and maize (cracked) were eaten with equal palatability. The average daily consumption of all food items in single choice tests was 8.61 g/bird/day. In multiple choice tests the variations in the intake rate were statistically significant (F equals to 8.4; P less than 0.05) and bajra was the most preferred food. In all combinations where bajra, sorghum and maize were offered, the consumption rate was approximately the same.
