Abstract

A new rearrangement in the benz (a) anthracene system which has been recently found out proceeds essentially in quantitative yield and with retention of positional integrity of the substituent on the group undergoing rearrangement. The products isolated are extremely difficult to prepare in any other way. This kind of approach is valuable for the synthesis of certain substituted polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.
