Abstract

Larva and adult flies of D. melanogaster are regularly the subject of many neuro-behavioural studies. It is interesting to note that some of the intrinsic behaviours for example phototaxis is apparently opposite in both larvae and adult flies, where the former is typically negatively phototactic and later is positively phototactic. However, in general screening, both positive and negative phototactic larvae and flies are often observed as well, respectively. In this study, we investigated the extension of the aberrant phototactic behaviour of the D. melanogaster larvae into the adult flies. Briefly, over 500 2nd instar larvae of D. melanogaster were screened for the phototactic behaviour. Subsequently, negative and positive phototactic larvae were placed in separate vials containing standard corn meal medium. In each vial not more than 10 larvae were placed. The flies developed from the larvae were placed for maturation for 16-18 hours and phototactic activity of the flies was examined by T-maze assay. Our data showed interesting pattern of transition of the larva phototactic activity in the adult flies in terms of proportion of positive and negative phototactic flies’ eclosed from both negative and positive phototactic larvae. In total, our findings demonstrate a governed phenomenon of transition of phototactic activity from larvae to adult flies.
