Abstract
Stress is a general term for any stimuli that has the potential to have an adverse psychological or physical effect on a person. Psychological problems like anxiety and depression can develop as a result of ongoing chronic stress. Periodontitis is characterised as an inflammation of the tooth`s supporting tissues that ultimately leads to gingival recession and the deterioration of the alveolar bone. It has been shown that 1, 25(OH) D 3 has a significant impact on the regulation of anxiety, depression, and periodontitis. The study`s objective was to compare 1, 25(OH) D 3 among individuals having anxiety and depression, with or without periodontitis, with healthy controls. Seventy-six healthy controls were selected from the faculty and students of Jinnah Medical and Dental College while seventy-six cases were selected from the Psychiatric ward and Dental OPD of Jinnah Medical and Dental College, Karachi. Salivary levels of 1, 25(OH) D 3 was measured using Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA). Significantly low levels of salivary 1, 25(OH) D 3 was reported in patients having anxiety, depression with healthy periodontium and patients with mental disorders with periodontitis as compared to healthy controls (p<0.05). Within the limits of the study, we can conclude that low salivary 1, 25(OH) D 3 can lead to anxiety, depression and periodontitis.
