Abstract

Mushroom is a conspicuous umbrella-shaped fruiting body of a fungi. It is fleshy and typically produced in soil, above the ground or on its food source. Mushrooms have high nutritional content currently counting around 2000 edible species found in different parts of the world. Mushroom cultivation has become very famous world-wide in recent years due to nutritional and medicinal importance. Cultivation of mushroom has remained very popular since it uses minimum land and produces significant money. One of the most common edible mushroom species grown industrially is Pleurotus spp., which makes up more than 16% of the mushrooms produced globally. In this research, two different substrates (wheat straw and saw dust) have been used for cultivation of mushrooms. The substrates were inoculated with spawn under controlled environmental conditions. The complete process has taken about 30 to 35 days to get a good and healthy yield. Oyster mushroom (Pleurotus ostreatus) is an edible mushroom and an essential food product. It is considered as a good source of proteins and have high nutritional properties of immense importance for humans. This study can further help to enhance the mushroom growth rate and production yield to fulfil increasing food demands.
