Abstract

A study to monitor groundwater aquifer profile was executed in Chaj Doab area (area raised between River Chenab and River Jhelum) during Oct-Nov 2003. About 288 number of farmers’ tubewells (with average boring depth of 40 ± 7m) were sampled and analyzed for conventional water quality indicators. Data on depth to water table were also recorded from 316 piezometers. The data were displayed on maps using GIS techniques. It was found that 42.71 percent farmers’ tube wells in Chaj Doab pump unfit water as per criteria of Punjab Irrigation Department (Unfit limits: EC ≥1.5 dS m-1, SAR ≥10 and RSC ≥2.5 me L-1). The general trends for conventional water quality indicators were: 0.27 ≥ EC ≤6.50 dS m-1, 0.1 ≥ SAR ≤60 and 0 ≥ RSC ≤14.4 me L-1. The corresponding mean values of EC, SAR and RSC parameters in the area were: 1.28 ± 0.85 dS m-1, 5.19 ± 5.90 and 1.73 ± 2.50 me L-1. It was established that out of unfit water samples, about 35 and 29 percent were unfit due to RSC and EC, respectively. Similarly, out of 96 piezometers installed in UJC command area, about 9.4 percent have depth to water table less than 152 cm and 42.7 percent between 457-762 cm, while in LJC command, out of 220 piezometers about 6.7 percent have depth to water table below 152 cm and 68.5 percent in the range of 152-457 cm. Depth to water table as high as 1189 cm was also recorded in the region. The area with depth to water table greater than 1050 cm needs special attention in context of groundwater abstraction. Beyond this limit the pumping cost starts increasing both in terms of instillation and operation. The RSC problematic water with its combinations is the main concern of the area. It is recommended that sulphuric acid depending on soil conditions may be used for treatment of high RSC groundwater.
