Abstract:
The aim of this randomized study was to evaluate the prevalence of conjunctival flora and identify its types in normal conjunctiva. It was sought to investigate the most predominating normal aerobic bacteria, in a sample population of 800 patients: aged 1 to 90 years. This study was continued for six months period at Akhtar Eye Hospital-OPD. Amongst the 800 patients, there were 375 (46.9) males and 425 (53.1%) females. Culture test reports showed "no growth" in 713 (89.1%) cases, while growth was observed in 87 (10.9%) subjects. Normal conjunctival flora was present in 60 (7.5%) while 27 (3.4%) cases had mixed bacterial or bacterial mixed with mycotic pathogens residing in their conjunctiva. Amongst the normal flora, Staphylococcus epidermidis (51.7%) was the most common aerobic bacteria, followed by Diphtheroids species (26.6%). "No growth" results indicate the absence of both useful flora as well as other pathogenic organisms.
