Abstract:
Objective: To find the incidence of differentiated thyroid carcinoma among patient who had operation for multinodular goiter (MNG) and to emphasize for the importance of FNA for suspicious lesion. Methodology: Information from a total of 78 adult patients was retrospectively reviewed from the general surgery clinic at King Hussein Medical Center (KHMC), Amman, Jordan who were seen from May 2017 to December 2019. Patients ID, date of the operation, clinical presentation, FNA result, histopathology result, type of surgery were recorded. Results: Out of 78 patients, 10 had a differentiated thyroid malignancy (9 papillary thyroid cancer and one follicular thyroid cancer) accounting almost 13 per cent of the patients. While 68 patients had a benign thyroid goiter. FNA results showed follicular carcinoma; just 1 of them had a true micro follicular cell carcinoma in histopathology. FNA showed a benign course in 19 patients; however, the malignancy presented in 2 cases (10.5%) with specificity of 89.5% and false negative rate of 10%. Conclusion: Differentiated thyroid carcinoma incidence in patient with multi nodular goiter was 13% and the most common was papillary thyroid carcinoma.
