Using indigenous humic acid from lignite to increase growth and yield of okra (Abelmoschus esculentus L.).

Abstract:
Humic acid (HA) is not considered to be fertilizers per se but soil enhancers and improver. It physically modifies the soil, biologically stimulates plant growth and chemically changes the fixation properties of soil. Humic acid (10% potassium humate derived from indigenous lignite coal) was applied in soil and its effect on growth and yield of okra was investigated under wire house conditions. Okra plants were treated with humic acid (10, 15 and 20 mg kg-1) and its effect was studied with full and half recommended dose of chemical fertilizer at 60-50-30 mg kg-1 soil which was equivalent to 120-100-60 kg ha-1 NPK, respectively. The experiment was laid out according to completely randomized design (CRD). Okra variety “Green Star” was used. Data on growth and yield parameters (shoot and root fresh and dry biomass, fresh and dry weight of fruit) were recorded. Results of the experiment indicated that HA significantly increased yield when applied with full recommended fertilizer but reducing recommended fertilizer to half even supplemented with HA was not significantly effective in increasing the green pod yield in okra.
