Abstract:
Various models have been proposed in the light of established experimental values, to predict heats of formation of transition metal alloys. Truly, theoretical models are not yet developed enough for reasonable estimates of the heats of formation of even simple alloy systems. Nevertheless, the empirical model proposed by Miedema offers possibility of quantitative estimation metals. The predicted values are fairly close to those experimentally obtained. In general, the overall success of the Miedema Model in comparison with the others proposed, is reasonable in view of the fact of complicated electronic configuration of transition metals. It is not surprising that in certain cases it is unable to account exactly for the behaviour of intermediate phases, since it does not incorporate any structure sensitive term.
