Abstract:
Wireless local loop (WLL) is an emerging access network technology. Asian nations like Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand are implementing WLL systems. A country like Pakistan, with less than 3% tele-density lags far behind in the race of progression. Realizing the needs of this country, the program of 2010 of Planning Commission plans for tele-density of 10% of the population the government decided to deregulate the telecom sector. This paper presents about the generic features, economic analysis, future markets and the regulatory aspects of WLL. It reviews different technologies for WLL systems and application for urban and rural environment. This also provides with up to date information on the WLL systems, worldwide markets and focuses on Pakistan for matters regarding WLL. WLL networks being deployed around the world are mostly based on CDMA principle. This technology is useful for providing cost effective limited mobility communication services and wireless telephone connection in the shortest possible time in areas where provision of landline telephone connection is not feasible or where demand for mobile phones is very high. The telecommunication requirements in Pakistan can adopt the WLL systems to quickly improve its tele-density. From scope and market potential, CDMA WLL systems are deployed in the rural as well as urban communication sectors.
