Abstract:
Juveniles of the caridean shrimps Exopalaemon styliferus, Palaemon sp. and Microbrachium lamarrei, and the penaeid shrimps, Metapenaeus affinis, M.lysianassa, Penaeus indicus and Parapenaeopsis stylifera, were collected from Keti Bunder and Turshian in the Indus delta in February and May, 1980. M. lysianassa is a first record from Pakistani waters. The shrimps were collected with the help of a small beam trawl, two beach seines and a cast net. E. styliferus dominated in February and M. affinis in May. In different hauls juveniles of only one to three shrimp species were present at a time. The study shows that shrimp seed, which would be required for aquaculture, is fairly abundant in the Indus delta despite the fact that, at present, this delta does not function as an estuary for the greater part of the year due to artificially reduced discharges of the river.
