Abstract:
Lahore is the second largest city of Pakistan and is located on the left bank of Ravi River. The city plays a significant role to economic development of the country. Due to increase of urban population, the city has been expanded to the lower alluvial plain without considering geological and geomorphological aspects. For proper utilization of geological data and rational urban planning, a detailed geo-environmental mapping of the city and surrounding area has been prepared. Flooding is the most prominent hazard of the Lahore city. The landform map of Lahore reveals that the city area is represented by undulating loess plain with mounds and low alluvial plains. The plains are constituted of young un-consolidation and aggradations of geological process. The hazards of the area are super flooding, valley flooding and urban flooding. The present study indicates that degree of risk and intensity of hazards are directly related to geology, landform, stratigraphy and engineering characteristics of material and annual climatic variation. They provide basics for mitigation plan, following seven maps have been prepared.  (1) Landform map, (2) Geological map, (3) River valley flood map, (4)Super flood map,  (5) Urban flood map, (6)Flood limits map, (7) Flood hazard zoning map. Synthesis of data from these maps would help in safe engineering planning and designing of structures for safety of property and life.
