Abstract:
The field application of PPP-sampling has been death with without discussing the theory of the technique involved. PPP sampling was first developed by Grosenbaugh (2) in 1963 as a variation of PPS sampling. Its primary purpose was to reduce cost of inventories and to increase efficiency. Its successful field application and subsequent refinement made it an independent, useful statistical tool for forest inventories. It was found to be more efficient than plot and point sampling and superior to all other cruising techniques. The volumes and values determined were free of error, whether or not an optical dendrometer was used to measure the sample trees.
