Abstract:
A low cost solution to processing 9 track 1600 BPI Phase Encoded data tapes with HP-9845B desktop computer is presented. The tape transport used is Cipher Microstreomer F-880 which runs on 25 ips. The coupler used between HP9845B computer and Cipher Microstreamer is Alloy engineering model TRS-232, which is connected to RS-232 serial port of the computer. The software written for reading AMOS III (Automatic Magnetic Observatory System Ill) data tapes is presented. AMOS III data consist of record blocks of 338 bytes in length. These data blocks are coded in EBCDIC format and are converted to ASCII format by the computer. This is necessary because HP-9845B computer works in ASCII format. Each of these data blocks is read as a string variable array of 338 characters and is further split into various real variable arrays such as the total field F, its X, Y. Z components, day of year, year, time and temperature of the sensor. The programme also evaluates the mean hourly values of each parameter and its hourly ranges. Sample printouts for May 1984 are presented. The system takes about five hours to process one month's data.
