Abstract:
Thy mango is attacked by a number of pests of which the mangohopper is the worst. In Sind there are three different species of this insect pest namely, Idlocerus atkinsoni Leth., Idlocerus niveosparsus Leth., and Idiocerus clypealis Leth. The species atkinsoni has a large body, its colour is grey; niveosparsus is medium sized with blackishgrey body, while clypealis is a small-bodied species with bright polish-grey colour. The life-cycle of a mangohopper consists of three stages, viz., egg, nymph and adult. There are five nymphal instars. The pest appears in the month of February and remains active up to October / November. It hibernates in cracks of the trees, crevices of land and under plant debris. Both nymphs and adults suck the sap of inflorescence, new growth tender leaves and cause heavy loss. The honey-dew produced by the insect causes blackening of the leaves with sooty mould. In order to suppress the attack by the mangohopper, various control measures such as cultural, mechanical and chemical are suggested in this paper.
