Abstract:
An experiment was carried out during 1978-81 to compare the growth and protection of three varieties of banana viz., Williams Hybrid, (imported in 1970 and 1975) and 'Basrai' of Musa Cavencishii group Sword type suckers planted in the pits in April 1978 were regularly irrigated and kept free of weeds. The results revealed that 'Williams Hybrid' imported in 1970 produced taller plants with heavier bunches of better grade and greater yield than 'Basrai' which is being commonly cultivated at present. The bunches of this variety also did not 'Choke' during winter but had rather thrown their bunches normally. It was found less susceptible to low temperatures and gave 1.5 times more yield as compared to 'Basrai'.
