Mitigation of drought stress in sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) by nickel application

Abstract:
Sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) is moderately drought tolerant crop since water stress reduces its achene yield. Nickel (Ni) is considered a phytotoxic element at its higher concentration while its low concentration has been proved to have beneficial effects on the growth, and physiological water use efficiency of sunflower. Studies were conducted to assess the impact of Ni on growth and yield of sunflower hybrid (ORISUN-648) under drought conditions. Two foliar applications of nickel sulfate (NiSO4) were made at vegetative growth and flowering phases of crop growth at its 0 ppm, 1.5 ppm and 3.0 ppm concentrations under fully irrigated and restricted irrigation regimes. The results revealed that water stress significantly reduced the leaf area index, crop growth rate, head diameter, total dry matter, and achene yield of sunflower crop. But significant improvement occurred in leaf area index, crop growth rate, 1000-achene weight and achene yield of sunflower by foliar application of 3 ppmNiSO4 solution under droughted environment. However, its plant height was not improved by different Ni foliar application treatments suggesting Ni may not have substantial effect on vertical growth of sunflower crop. But, significant improvement (29%) in total dry matter of sunflower by foliar application of Niunder drought conditions suggests its positive role in drought amelioration in sunflower.
