Abstract:
Discusses the accuracy of the decay constant estimated from a least squares analysis of a counting experiment conducted with a multichannel scalar. The effects of correlations between the counts in different channels, counter efficiency and dead-time, and of background, are all included. The conditions are easily satisfied for a close approach to the best possible accuracy in measurement of the decay constant of a source of given strength.
