Abstract:
As a follow up of the previous stucb, on sizes of groups in applied research organizations, in the present paper a statistical analysis is made of the sizes of research groups in specialist monofunctional research units and in some Pakistani and foreign university departments. Analysis of the data on crystallographic research groups hi eleven typical countries, taken from the 1971 edition of the World Directory of Crystallographers, shows two related bimodal distributions for (1) the countries with well established crystallographic tradition and (it) those that are relatively new entrants. The well established category shows peaks at 5 and 16 persons per group, while the second one has the two peaks at slightly smaller sizes of 3 and 12 persons per group. The data on Pakistan`s universities in 1971-72 similarly breaks up into two categories, for the older and the new universities, respectively, When plotted as number of workers per professor or specialist group, it yields distributions with peaks at 6 and 11 persons, the distribution for the older universities being bimodal. A similar analysis of some typical sets of universities in India, Australia and United Kingdom confirm the occurrence of this bimodal distribution with peaks at 5=1 and 10=1 persons per groups, with the second peak height being mostly one-third to two-thirds of the first. Analysis of some Canadian data shows a similar distribution but contracted by a factor of approximately 2/3, exhibiting peaks at group sizes of 3 and 7 per professor, which may be a symptom of over-specialization.
