Abstract:

The monitoring and mapping of LULC changes through the multi-temporal digital (satellite) data provides detailed information about the urban development. The knowledge about the LULC change generated through the geo-statistical and geo-informatics techniques is significant for the urban land use planning, management and utilization. The anthropogenic activities and technological advancements are considered to be responsible for a changed dynamics in urban areas. The study aiming at to investigate the LULC changes using multi-temporal satellite data (1992- 2010)in urban areas and to identify the hot spots of land use changes pertaining to various categories. The conclusion drawn related to the LULC changes through the supervised image classification scheme applied on temporal satellite datasets for the year 1992, 2000, 2005 and 2010. A digital image classification of six reflective bands of Landsat imageries is been applied towith maximum likelihood algorithm. It has been observed through the change detection that the built up area has increased by 35percent from 6163.11ha to 9480.44 ha between 1990 and 2010. Moreover, the green area in the city has reduced from 9480.44 ha to 7307.67 ha while the barren land also has decreased from 6071.49 hato 4207.91ha. The growth of urban population and economic expansion are exerting pressure on urban land resources and consequently bringing changes in LULC of the City of Faisalabad.
