Abstract:
A desert afforestation technique has been developed for the special environmental conditions prevailing in Abu Dhabi. Because of extremely harsh climatic and adaphic factors all plantatidns are raged by transplanting sturdy and well grown nursery plants ranging from six-months to one-year old. The species most commonly planted are `Ghat` (P. spicigera), `Samar` (Acacia tortolis), `Side (Z. sprinachristi) and `Qarat` (A. arabica). On desert sub-soil water, using the drip or trickle irrigation systems, about 200 plants per hectare are, raised. In the first year of planting, the plants are provided about five gallons of water per plant per day, which is subsequently increased to 10 gallons of water per plant per day. The date palm (Phoneix dactilifera) requires two to three times the water given to the above mentioned four arid zone species. The greening of the desert in Abu Dhabi is a great challenge to the professional forester. The work done so far in Abu Dhabi has met with considerable success.
