Abstract:
Paper reports that the grade of cotton being primarily dependent on three factors, namely colour, leaf and preparation, the scatter of the points in the graph of grade versus Rd; grade versus non-lint and grade versus 'b' value, was in most instances very large. The UHML was within .01" of the staple length in about 60% of the cases and within .02" of the staple length in about 85% of the cases. The NT & 289F crops in 1959-60 were the worst of all the four years from 1957-58 onwards. NT (1960-61) crop was that of 1957-58 and much on top. 289F(1960-61) was some-what better than in preceding years. The region-wise differences in the fiber properties of cottons of any particular variety were not well pronounced and the trend was not the same in different years. UHML was about the same in different regions within a year. 4F and LSS crops showed little variation in different years. Lassani crops in 1959-60 and 1960-61 were poor compared to previous years. The 1960-61 AC-134 crop did not show marked difference with that of 1959-60. The colour characteristics of NT/R and 289F/R (1957-58 & 1958-59) were very much alike and had led to the idea of pooling the grade boxes of the two cottons together. However, the results of the subsequent two years showed marked differences between the two; and the question of pooling of the boxes is under further study.
