Abstract:
The Differential Aptitude Test Battery (DATB) has proved successful as a predictor of academic success in America. The present study was conducted to assess the possibility of using DATB or an adapted version of it for the selection of students in the University of Engineering and Technology, Lahore. Results of 86 students in B.Sc., F.Sc. and DATB sub-tests were used as predictor scores and their result in the B.Sc. Engineering Part I examination was used as the criterion score. The highest correlation was obtained between the Numerical Ability test (NA) and the criterion score. The other sub-tests of DATB did not prove to have significantly more predictive validity for engineering success, in comparison to the B.Sc. and F.Sc. examination results. The high validity coefficient obtained for the NA test is encouraging and shows that appropriate aptitude tests can be used for selection and guidance purposes. However, the tests developed in the West should be adapted for Pakistan before being used 0-, selection devices.
