Abstract:
From athalassohaline soils bacteria were isolated at 1 M NaCI plates. Plasmid bearing strains were checked at elevated NaCI concentrations and an isolate which could tolerate 2.5 M and above NaCI was studied. It was alkaliphilic Gram-negative, strictly aerobic, motile cocci (occur in pairs and aggregates). This bacterium forms light orange circular and convex colonies with entire margin. Isolate had oxidase and urease enzymes and could reduce nitrate. It gave positive reactions for ONPG, arginine dehydrolase ornithin decarboxylase and methyl red. It was identified as a Halococcus sp.
