Abstract:
Plant-based medicine is gaining popularity nowadays speedily, and their utilization is also increasing day by day. The basic and main issue in herbal drugs utilization is theirsafety and efficacy. The quality assurance is main issue in the use of herbal drugs. Adulteration in herbal plants is the major safety and efficacy issue in the standardization of herbal drugs. Adulteration is a critical issue and burning problem in the herbal industry, and it is a major drawback in the promotion of the herbal drugs. There are many reasons of adulteration including similarity in morphology, unscientific collection, lack of knowledge about authentic plants identification, and herbal drugs high prices in markets. Mainly there are two types of adulteration, intentional and accidental. Adulteration is mostly done intentionally on commercial scale in order of enhancement of profit. Accidental adulteration is normally due to lack of facilities or the result of ignorance may cause accidental adulteration. Pakistan has blessed with almost six thousand plant species and most of them are used medicinally. But use of herbal plants is restricted due to adulteration issue. This issue can be solved taxonomically by applying both classical and modern techniques. It is a need of time to develop authentication approaches and tools for correct identification and authentication of herbal plants and for the standardization of herbal drugs to minimize adulteration issue."
