Avifauna Diversity, Distribution and Abundance at Tehsil Sheringal, District Upper Dir, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Pakistan

Abstract:
The current study was undertaken at tehsil Sheringal to find out the avifauna diversity, distribution and abundance at four different habitats viz alpine, forest, agro forest and riparian habitat of the study area in the summer season during the period from April, 2018 to September, 2018. Direct survey methods such as point count and line transects were employed and the diversity, distribution and abundance of bird’s species have been determined by visual sighting, calls and capturing pictures. During the entire survey total 3958 individuals were recorded belonging to 66 different species and 24 different families. Data were analyzed by Species Diversity Richness software (SDR). And the diversity index, species richness and species evenness of each habitat type was determined which shows that agro forest is densely populated with Shannon-Weiner diversity index is3.367, in forest 3.296, in riparian 3.135 whereas the alpine habitat is least populated with diversity index is 2.639. Similarly, the species evenness is highest in the forest habitat 0.904, agro forest 0.848, riparian 0.843 and lowest0.799 in alpine habitat. The dominant families were Muscicapidae represented by 15 species, Passiridae 09 species and Corvidae comprising 06 species. The most common and wide spread species of the area were Common myna(11.82%), House sparrow (8.49%), Yellow-belled cough (7.40%), Great tit(6.90%) and Streak laughing thrush (6.75%). The major threats to the avifauna of the study area have also observed such as deforestation, use of insecticides and pesticides in agriculture field, removing of shrubs, illegal hunting, overgrazing and trapping etc. The conservation status of most of the recorded species is least concern.
