Abstract:
Three chameleons from a colony of Chamaeleo =Triocerusjacksoniidied were checked (autopsy) for parasites. All three had mature ascarid nematodes within the digestive tract. The worms were classified as Baylisascaris procyonis a common ascarid of the raccoon. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was completed on the worms which further validated the scientific name of the parasite. Key morphological features were visible including the three lips of the mouth with denticles, amphids and numerous body tubercles. Cloacal enlargements (Phasmids) and papillae were observed. The zoonotic potential of Baylisascaris was reviewed. This is a new host record for the worm. Human implications for the parasite such as larval migans is of major concern.
