Abstract:
Molecular weights for different fractions of cellulose acetate obtained from Ravi Rayon Chemical Company, Lahore were determined by viscosity method using Ostwald's Viscometer. The effect of temperature on viscosity was also studied. The different temperatures used were 10°C, 20°C, 25°C , and 30°V. The values of instrinsic viscosity were obtained by plotting sp/c versus concentration for different fractions, and extrapolating to zero concentration. It is concluded that the value of intrinsic viscosity decreases from higher to lower fractions related to concentration. It is also concluded that value of intrinsic viscosity decreases as the temperature increases. Molecular weight for different fractions were obtained by viscosity measurement at 25°C. These values were compared with the values of molecular weight by light scattering technique. It is concluded that the values obtained by the two methods are in good agreement with each other.
