Abstract:
Temperomondibular disorders may be systemic or local in origin, the latter now being regarded as multifactorial. The importance of the role of muscles and ligaments is now receiving much greater attention than in the past, especially in problems related to disfunction. As a result, treatment has moved away from the surgical to a more conservative approach, although dental treatment such as hard or soft occlusion splints and accusal rehabilitation cannot be overlooked. The employment of physiotherapy is discussed, including the use of ice packs, therapeutic, ultrasound, shortwave diathermy, superficial heat, exercises, mobilisations and biofeedback.
