Abstract:
The investigation was conducted to determine the total costs of producing ready-to-lay pullets of two breeds under East Pakistan condition. 26 White Cornish and 25 White Leghorn pullets were taken from East Pakistan Agricultural University Poultry Farm for conducting the experiment. The experiment was continued for about six months till 20% of the birds started laying. White Cornish pullets started laying at 25 weeks of age. A heavy breed pullet consumed on average 27.62 pounds of feed till the end of the experiment. One hour and 17 minutes of labour hour was used for growing one heavy breed pullet. The average mortality rate in case of heavy breed was 6% and the percentage of pullets was 52. White Leghorn pullets started laying at 22 weeks of age. A light breed pullet consumed 18.80 pounds of feed on average. They reached maturity earlier than heavy breed. It requires less labour to bring them up to ready-to-lay in comparison with heavy breed. The average percentage of mortality was 4 in case of light breed and the percentage of pullets was 50. The total costs for producing in case of heavy breed was Rs. 5.88 paisa and in case of light breed was Rs. 4.49 paisa each.
