Abstract:
There are normally a pair of rostral barbels in C. mrigala (Hamilton), but in one specimen (presented by Miss Rukhsana Zafar, Government College, Lahore, collected from the river Ravi at Head Balloki on 20-12-1975), there is a single maxillary barbel on the left side in addition to the normal rostral pair. An additional barbel also is known in Cyprinion watsoni (Day). In this species, there are normally a pair maxillary barbels but an additional rostral barbel may be present in some specimens. Thus, the number and kinds of barbels are extremely variable in the Cyprinidae and the above statement given by Roberts needs amendment.
