Abstract:

The current information on the taxonomy of the genus Achaetomium. 6-species isolated from soil and leaf litter samples collected from saline and sodic soils of Punjab and NWFP. Among these, four species namely A. luteum Rai; Tewari. A. thielavioides var microsporum var. nov., A. variosporum sp. nov. and Achaetomium sp. no. 455 are new records from this area. A key of six species and their ecological distribution has been given. These were tested for their cellulase activity and salt tolerance by using corboxyrnethyl cellulose medium was supplemented with various concentrations of NaCI. Maximum cellulase activity was shown by A. globosum. All one species proved to be salt sensitive, as very little cellulase activity was observed at 3% NaCI. A. struium, however, showed some cellulase activity at 10% NaCI.
