Abstract:
A total of 400 normal and tonsilitis cases were studied from July 1970 to December 1972, in Pakistan. The pathogenic organisms isolated from tonsillitis cases and the carrier strains from the normal healthy persons. The study of pathogenic characters of 155 strains of Staphylococcus pyogenes isolated from two groups revealed that most of them were coagulase production, mannitol fermentation and tellurite reduction. Most of the carrier strains were cream yellow while tonsillitis strains were dull white. Most of 155 strains Staphylococcus pyogenes were typable by group III phage. The pattern in carrier strains were 72/53/6/US7/52/ 81/83 whereas in tonsillitis strains were 81/3A/54/73/77/6. All the strains of Staphyloccocus pyogenes were resistant to penicillin. The stroptomycin resistance was variable in two groups. The tonsillitis strains showed resistance to chloramphenicol, gentamicin, Co-trimoxazole and cloxacillin while some of the strains of both groups were resistant to erythromycin and tetracycline, showed very low resistance to combination of antibiotics. Hence, combined antibiotics thereapy in such infection can be helpful.
