Abstract:
In the present study the effect of solidity and tip clearance has been studied for the single stage low pressure turbine. Fluent finite volume based CFD code is used for this computational study. Mixing planes are used to link the rotating and non rotating components. Periodic conditions are applied in order to reduce the computational cost. The effect of turbulence model and grid size on computed results has also been evaluated and it was ensured that the results are independent of grid and turbulence model. In the present work various values of solidity have been used by changing the chord to pitch ratio i.e., by changing the number of blades of rotor and results shown that separation occur in low solidity rotor, while in high solidity rotor boundary layer dominates the flow. Various tip clearances ranging from zero to six percent of blade height have been used to analyze the effect of tip clearance height on computed efficiency and the results shown that efficiency decreases with an increase in tip clearance. For the present paper, computations are focused on design point speed and flow rate.
