Abstract:
The paper presents the oral hygiene, gingival inflammation, periodontal and dental conditions in 118 smokers and non-smokers healthy subjects. Equal number of smokers were compared to non-smokers matched for age, sex and social status. Smokers were habitual of cigarette smoking for at least 4 years. A highly statistically significant difference have been shown regarding the debris index, calculus index, gingival index, pocket depth and decay, missing and filling dental index in young and old age smokers when compared with the non-smokers. A significant correlation was found between the oral hygiene index and periodontal status. A positive correlation was also found between the number of cigarettes smokes and oral hygiene index and periodontal health parameters while decay, missing and filling (DMF) score remained same. The findings indicate that cigarette smoking may cause gingivitis and periodontitis by worsening the oral hygiene status of the individual.
