Abstract:
Coronopus didymus (L) Smith. an annual weed of cultivation in Pakistan. was tested for its allelopathy against some cultivated species. It was found that the germination, early growth and biomass of Brassica campestris, Triticum vulgare, Lense culinearis. Zea mays, Pennisetum americanum, and Setaria italica were invariably reduced by extracts from shoots and roots, growth medium containing shoot mulch and affected soil in different experiments. Caffeic, chlorogenic, P - OH benzoic and ferulic acids were chromatographically identified as some of the possible inhibitors. The phytotoxicity was related to the part assayed. freshness of the material, and test species involved. Different growth parameters were differentially susceptible to the same treatment in the same species. It is suggested that litter of this weed may not be left in the fields owing to its allelopathy.
