Abstract:
Sands from Daudkhel have been investigated in the present study for utilization in making high grade colourless glass after beneficiation with commercial hydrochloric acid to remove the undesirable iron content. Prior to hydrochloric acid leaching the sample was graded, Water-washed and magnet treated. But the quantity of the residual iron was too high for use in the manufacture of sophisticated glass products like high grade colourless glass, chemical glassware etc. Hence the sand was further subjected to hydrochloric acid leaching varying the acid concentration, temperature and time period of leaching to determine the optimum condition for the removal of iron. With the view to keeping the cost of beneficiation process low it was intended to avoid too high a concentration of hydrochloric acid, long reaction time and a very high temperature. Representative bulk samples were collected from a local glass factory using Daudkhel silica sand.
