Abstract:
It this work we have obtained two mathematical expressions for calculating the optimum operating time period, in terms of the maintenance time period, which produce maxima for the average heat transfer rate across heat exchanger tubes. One of this expression is based on an overall heat transfer coefficient in which the fouling and scale build up increases linearly with time, while for the second expression an empirical overall coefficient which varies inversely with the square root of time is used. Based on the results and discussion it is recommended to use those optimum times since at these conditions the heat exchanger is operating in an economic manner.
