Abstract:
The aim of this project is to devise and implement a simple method of forward error control (FEC) for Digital Mobile Radio Systems based on the principle of time diversity. The propagation environments in mobile radio systems are such that due to fading, the signal encounters noise error bursts of statistically variable length and random locations. This scheme allows a reduction of bit error rate (BER) from 5 x 10 to 4 x 10 at 20db SNR for binary FSK at a vehicle speed 20 mph. Unlike common ARQ schemes, the time-diversity also offers an easy synchronisation facility using a forward channel with error detection at the receiver. The optimum values of the parameters are derived from the statistical analysis of distribution of fade duration and their rate. BER predictions, based on the fade statistics are then used to compare the time-diversity scheme with systems employing no diversity or space-diversity for binary FSK transmissions.
