Abstract:
The freshwater algae of Shahalam River (Pakistan) were studied in detail during March 2006. A total of 20 genera with 48 species belonging to the phyla Cyanophyta, Volvocophyta, Bacillariophyta Chlorophyta, Charophyta and Vaucheriophyta, were observed. The Chlorophyta was the most common phylum and members of Cyanophyta and Bacillariophyta were less common among them. While the phyla like Volovocophyta, Charophyta and Vaucheriophyta were represented by one species each. Among collected genera, Spirogyra with its 12 species was found to be most common. No other genus was represented by more than four species.
