Abstract:
The aim of our determine was to determine the diagnostic accuracy of ultrasonography in infantile hypertrophic pyloric stenosis (IHPS). The ultrasound was performed in twenty cases with clinical diagnosis of IHPS. All patients after ultrasound scanning with diagnosis of this condition underwent surgery. The ultrasound scan detected findings like length of pyloric canal and thickness of pyloric wall. The results suggest that ultrasound scans can be useful in the diagnosis of IHPS. An experienced sonographer is required for his simple, cost effective and non-invasive procedure, having a very high percentage of accuracy rate. From our study we concluded that ultrasound scanning is the first line of investigation, especially when the diagnosis is uncertain, to prevent unnecessary surgery.
