Abstract:
A detailed study of the genus Olea has been reported. The key characters and description are given for the species, O. ferruginea Royle, O. glandulifera Wall, O. dioica Roxb, O. europaea L., Savillano, Ascolano, Manzanilla and Mission. Mention of the European varieties introduced in the Indo-Pakistan sub-continent in the early 19th century has been made. Details of the plantations at Ghari Dopatta, Tandali, Chattar Kalas and many other places in West Pakistan have been given in 17 separate tables. The cultural requirements of olive relating to climate, moisture, soil, propagation, grafting, planting, irrigation and manuring have been described. The proper management, and uses of olive for oil extraction, pickling and canning have also been mentioned.
