Abstract:
The survey was launched to assess the wheat performance in two districts of irrigated Punjab, Sargodha and Toba Tek. Singh from 82 farmers. During the Rabi season (2002-03) area allocated to wheat was increased 4.29 %, but our country has experienced a decreased wheat production in the irrigated areas. The aims of the survey were to figure out the real factors that contributed towards low wheat production. The results of the study were anticipated to provide basis for devising strategy to sustain future wheat production. Inqlab 91 was the dominant variety in Sargodha and Wattan in Toba Tek.Singh. Inqlab 91 was grown on 61 % area followed by Wattan which was planted on 29 % area .Per acre use of phosphatic nutrients increased from 26.72 to 29.24 kg nutrients and nitrogen fertilizer increased from 47.70 to 51.91 kg nutrients per acre. In the mixed zone of the Punjab the minimum yield decreased from 1372.8 kg to 1201.2 kg while the maximum yield limit decreased from 1648 to 1566 kg per acre. The rainfall situation during rabi 2002-03 was relatively much better than the previous drought years. The price received from the purchase center were the same as support price while little higher prices (Rs. 304 per 40 kg)) than the support prices were reported from flour mills in district Sargodha. The price paid by the village consumer and arthi were rupees 292 per 40 kg. The price paid by the village beopari were Rs. 292 in Toba Tek. Singh and Rs. 270 per 40 kg in Sargodha. Farmers were expecting more than 2000 kg per acre in the mixed cropping zone of the Punjab. According to farmers’ perceptions the wheat disease was the main cause of decrease in wheat yield in Toba Tek. Singh as reported by 44 % while lodging was the main cause reported by 41 % farmers in Sargodha.
