Abstract:
Hydroxyapatite (HA) is a major component of bones and teeth. Synthesis of hydroxyapatite (Calcium phosphate, C10(PO4)6(OH)2) was carried out to produce plate or needle shaped crystals using Cetyl Trimethyl Ammonium Bromide (CTAB) as a surfactant. CTAB, a cationic surfactant, creates micelle structures which would act as nano reactors for the synthesis of nano scale HA. Yield of the final product is also examined by varying the surfactant concentration. X-ray diffraction data revealed characteristic peaks of HA, where a predominantly hexagonal lattice structure can be deduced. FTIR have been used to observe the various chemical groups present in the product. SEM is also being used for the characterization of nano Particles.
