Flow analysis of Elbow type Draft tube for the determination of Engineering quantities.

Abstract:
Conventional hydroelectric generation uses water as a renewable energy source and produces "clean energy". In this paper, State of art of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) in hydraulic draft tube was addressed and estimation of engineering quantities for the design of draft tube has been presented. The three-dimensional turbulent flow in a compact hydraulic machine elbow draft tube is numerically investigated to capture the swirling flow at two different operating conditions. The static pressure recovery and velocity field are also investigated inside an elbow type draft tube. The results demonstrate that values of the overall pressure coefficient and energy loss coefficient for the two different mass flow rates are not significantly different as compared with the other engineering quantities.
