Amelioration of gentamicin nephrotoxicity by vitamin B6 (a general and histochemical profile).

Abstract:
Gentamicin of any therapeutic dose even for few days reported to cause various degrees of nephrotoxicity. Aminoglycoside (gentamicin) administration has been found to be associated with a decrease in renal pyridoxal 5-phosphate (a biologically most active coenzyme of vitamin B6) levels. Evidences suggest that this depletion of the vitamin B6 in Kidneys may be a main factor in the development of gentamicin induced nephrotoxicity. The objective of the study was to observe the treatment effect of vitamin B and gentamicin for nephrotoxicity in rats. Albino rats were divided into four groups having seven in each group. To Group A, only distilled water was administered. To group B animals, vitamin B6 was given. Group C animals were administered gentamicin in nephrotoxic dose. To group D animals, gentamicin and vitamin B6 was administered simultaneously for 10consecutive days. On the 11th day, the animals were sacrificed and their kidneys removed for further detailed evaluation. It was observed and concluded in the present study that simultaneous administration of vit-B6 (pyridoxine) and gentamicin for 10-days preserved not only the renal histological but also histochemical morphological parameters of kidneys in young albino rats.
