Abstract:
A method is devised to test the prismatic plain concrete specimens in direct tension. The major problems involved in the tests were 'Gripping of the prismatic concrete specimens' and 'Measurement of the micro-strains due to tension'. The former problem was overcome by using two identical scissor type lateral grips at the ends of the specimen while for latter the linear variable differential transformer type transducers, connected with Multi-Channel Carrier Amplifier System were used to plot the load-strain curves. The occurrence of the fracture within the gauge length and the consistency of the results indicate the validity of the method devised to test concrete in direct tension.
